Project overview
Date of completion 2024
Bridge 16, situated on the Midland Line, has undergone essential upgrades to secure its structural integrity and operational reliability for years to come. This project, delivered by Liddell Construction, involved replacing deteriorating timber piers and abutments with modern, sustainable materials while preserving heritage values and minimising environmental impact. Despite challenges such as restricted site access and active rail operations, the project was completed on time and within budget, further enhancing the safety and efficiency of rail services.
Scope of Works
1. Replacement of Timber Piers
• Replaced piers 1, 2, 8, and 9 with durable materials to improve structural strength and longevity.
2. Site Preparation
• Conducted preparatory activities, including setting up compounds, installing scaffolding, mitigating contamination, and staging for piling operations.
3. Abutment and Earthworks
• Strengthened abutments and performed earthworks to ensure stability at bridge approaches.
4. Scour Protection
• Installed erosion control measures to protect against waterbed scouring.
5. Final Site Restoration
• Dismantled temporary structures, removed compounds, and restored the site to its original condition.
Engineering Challenges
1. Remote Location:
Required precise logistics and planning due to limited site access.
2. Active Rail Line:
Ensured uninterrupted rail services through advanced safety protocols and expertise in rail infrastructure.
3. Specialised Construction
Involved heavy lifting, large-scale piling, and confined space operations, necessitating innovative engineering solutions.
