Project overview

Location West Coast

Date of completion 2023

Bridge 52, located across Goat Creek in Otira on the West Coast, underwent a comprehensive rail beam replacement project as part of KiwiRail's structural upgrade initiative. The project focused on enhancing the structural integrity and operational efficiency of the single-track steel bridge, spanning from April 2023 to its completion in December 2023.

Key scope components included the removal of lead-based paint, drilling of existing floor beams, installation of modern rail brackets, and modification of cross-bracings to accommodate new steel rail beams. Pre-cast concrete bolsters were fabricated on-site to replace existing supports, enabling the successful replacement of hardwood rail beams during a 7-day Block of Line disruption.

A highlight was the integration of safety-conscious innovations, such as a full deck under scaffolding platform, allowing 80% of the works to be completed outside the rail corridor. The involvement of Liddell’s divisions, from mechanical workshops to heavy civil crews, ensured a collaborative approach despite adverse winter conditions.

The project was delivered on budget at $1.31M plus approved variations and received positive feedback from KiwiRail, achieving an 80% rating in client relationship management. The outcome effectively modernised an ageing structure, ensuring its functionality for years to come.
